One of the questions I am asked often as I travel the United States speaking at conferences is how to manage change in the workplace. People want to know how to stay motivated during these tough and tumultuous times.
For whatever reason, most people are fighting change. In fact, many are giving up. They are walking away from their dreams. That is really sad! When we were a kid, somebody should have told us that change is necessary for growth. And it is unavoidable.
Why do we love to cling to our old lives or ways of doing things so much? Can you guess? The answer is simple. As human beings, we love being comfortable. We are always in the pursuit of comfort.
I want you to take a good look around your workplace and notice all the changes that are going. Do you think you the fact that you are not happy with them will stop them from happening? Of course, the answer is no.
You see, unless you find a way to put leash on those changes, they will put a leash on you and control your life. Stop reacting to change. Stand up and take charge. The reality is, change was there before you came and it will be there after you leave.
Listen, your life is like a ship. Steer it in the directions you want it to go. Don’t let change steer it for you.
Here Are 3 Simple Ways to Manage Change In The Workplace:
1- Embrace & Accept It. I know you have heard this probably a million times. But as simple as it sounds, it’s the first step toward dealing with change. There’s no other first step. This is it!
Let’s face it, you cannot change the fact your company is changing things. In fact, even the company itself cannot change it. They are forced to do so. Global competition demands it. Why would you want to fight those changes?
The moment change shows up and tries to shift our lives, we put our gloves on and start fighting. Here’s the bad news: You will never, ever, win. If you are fighting change, you are fighting a losing battle.
I know you want to win in life, right? Okay, win as a change agent. Fight for what you want instead for fighting against what you don’t want.
2- Don’t Take Change Personal. Now, you may be thinking the fact that the company is cutting your budget or reducing your staff, they are doing it to you. Or maybe the little voice in your head might say, “They just want to get rid of me.”
Well you could be right? But, did you ever consider that everyone is being affected by the current changes? It’s not just happening to you or your company. It’s everywhere. The tides lift all boats.
The reality is, any company that does not radically change the way they do business today will become irrelevant and unnecessary. They will be swallowed by the competition.
Here’s my best advice for you: Do not internalize what’s going on. What do I mean by that? Well, be an observer. For example, if there’s a layoff going on, see it outside of you.
You cannot feel and experience something that is happening outside of you, right? You might as well point your finger at it and say, “This is a layoff.” That’s the best way to eliminate your stresses for good.
Look at your problems and challenges just like you look at a tree, car, house, etc. That doesn’t mean you don’t care. It means you are in control. It means you can find the solutions without tears.
3- Reinvent Yourself. Albert Einstein said, “The significant problems we face cannot be solved at the same level of thinking we were at when we created them.” If you think the person you have always been can solve your problems, think again.
It’s like being a manager and now you are the CEO of the company. Do you think who you were as a manager can lead the company? Nope. You are going to become a new you. I’m talking about a new mindset.
Likewise, you need a new mindset to deal with today’s rapid and violent changes. You need to have a new way of thinking. You need fresh knowledge. And best of all, you need a new attitude.
There you have it. I just gave you some insights on how to manage changes in the workplace. Take the time to ponder on them. So many people are giving up in the face of change. I don’t want you to be one of them. You can win in spite of the challenges.
I look forward to hearing your feedback or questions for me. Keep pressing on. And remember this: Change is a gift!

Jolly show. I instantly wanted to share it with my wife, I loved the story about how you made it to
America and Miami. The story about the rattlesnake and Bee is so true. Please continue doing what you do because this is one of the best examples of the American Dream.
